Google Imagen metadata explained
Google's image models are the clearest example of why metadata and watermarking are two separate topics that people keep confusing.
What ends up in the file
Images may carry a C2PA manifest and IPTC fields marking them as AI generated, depending on the product and the export path. Independently of that, Google applies SynthID, an invisible watermark embedded in the pixels themselves and designed to survive cropping, recompression and format conversion.
Removing it
Our cleaner removes the metadata layer completely. It does not and cannot remove SynthID, because that lives in the image data rather than in a tag. Anyone with access to Google's detector can still identify the image after every tag is gone, and you should assume that is the case.
