Opens What Nothing Else Will
Windows Photos, Photoshop and most older apps still refuse AVIF. Your browser can read it, so this tool turns it into something everything accepts.
Nothing Is Uploaded
The file is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser. It never reaches a server, so private photos and screenshots stay private.
Bulk and Unlimited
Drop in a whole folder of AVIF files, convert them in one go and download the batch as a ZIP. No queue, no quota, no watermark.
No Quality Lost in Transit
The image is decoded at full resolution and re-encoded at high quality, so the result is as close to the original as the target format allows.
What Is an AVIF File and Why Won't It Open?
AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec. It compresses far better than JPG - often half the size at the same quality - which is why websites, CDNs and phones increasingly serve it by default. The catch is that support outside the browser lags badly: save an image from a site and you end up with a file that Windows Photos, the macOS Preview of older systems, WhatsApp, Word and most photo editors simply refuse to open.
How to Open an AVIF File
The easiest route is the one you are already on: your browser can decode AVIF, so converting it to JPG or PNG makes it readable everywhere without installing a codec pack. On Windows you can alternatively install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, and on macOS Ventura and later Preview opens AVIF natively - but neither helps when you need to email the file to someone else.
Converting AVIF Without Uploading
Drop your files into the area above, choose JPG, PNG or WEBP and click convert. Each image is decoded with the browser's own AVIF decoder, drawn onto a canvas and re-encoded in the target format. Because all of that happens locally, there is no upload, no file-size limit and no waiting for a server queue - and the images never touch anyone else's infrastructure.
Which Format Should You Convert To?
Choose JPG when the file has to work everywhere - email attachments, forms, printing and older software. Choose PNG when the image contains text, screenshots or transparency, because PNG is lossless and will not smear sharp edges. Choose WEBP when the file is destined for a website: it keeps most of AVIF's size advantage while being supported by every current browser.
