Remove GPS location from photo metadata

A phone or camera may record the exact coordinates where a photo was taken. These GPS tags can reveal your home, workplace or a private location even when the image itself does not. Removing location metadata reduces that exposure without requiring a new image compression in GPS-only mode.

GPS-only mode removes standard EXIF GPS blocks and GPS coordinate fields in supported XMP packets, including compressed PNG XMP. Other EXIF/XMP fields, color profiles, orientation and compressed image data are retained. Photos without supported GPS fields remain unchanged. Originals are never overwritten.

GPS-only mode is not a complete anonymizer: filenames, free-text descriptions, custom metadata and visible landmarks can still reveal a location. Extended JPEG XMP, raw-profile PNG metadata and motion photos/MPO require the all-metadata option, which exports a still image. Editing metadata can invalidate embedded content signatures. HEIC, RAW, TIFF and video are not supported.

Photo GPS metadata questions

Does removing GPS metadata reduce photo quality?

GPS-only mode does not decode and recompress the image data. Resolution, compression, transparency, orientation and color profiles are preserved. The optional all-metadata mode re-exports the image and has different quality, color and animation limitations.

Can I keep camera settings and copyright?

Yes. The default GPS-only setting retains other standard metadata, including camera settings, capture dates, author and copyright. The additional checkbox removes all original metadata instead.

Does every photo contain GPS metadata?

No. Location recording may be disabled, or a previous export may already have removed it. A no-GPS result means no supported GPS fields were found, not that the photo contains no identifying information.

Are my photos sent to a server?

No. Reading, cleaning and ZIP generation run locally in your browser. The website loads its application libraries, but your selected photo files are not uploaded. Keep your originals if you need their metadata later.
